By Dr. Rex Casiple

There are at least 25 public and private engineering schools in Western Visayas. Twenty three (23) have been operating in the last six years offering traditional engineering programs: BS Mechanical Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering, BS Chemical Engineering and BS Civil Engineering.

The importance of Mechanical Engineers in nation-building and development is highlighted in industrial development. The participation of Mechanical Engineers in improving the practice of mechanical engineering in the country continues to strengthen several sectors, further expand manufacturing endeavor, and optimize the agricultural sector.

There are at least thirteen (13) Mechanical Engineering schools operating in the Region in the last six (6) years. The high performing, based on their passing average of not lower than 75% in Mechanical Engineer Licensure Examinations given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in 2015 to 2019 are Central Philippine University, TUP-Visayas, University of San Agustin and ISAT University. The Region has produced at least 1,259 passers out of 1,772 takers. TUP-Visayas, the top producer of Mechanical Engineers in the Region has produced at least 496 passers out of around 566 takers.

The Electrical Engineering profession centers on the generation and utilization of electricity for industrial, commercial, and residential purposes. Electrical Engineering also deals with the development and real-life applications of electrical circuitry, digital systems, electrical equipment, and machine control.

There are at least eleven (11) Electrical Engineering schools operating in the Region in the last six (6) years. The high performing, based on their passing average of not lower than 75% in Registered Electrical Engineer Licensure Examinations given by the PRC from 2017 to 2019 are University of St. La Salle, Central Philippine University and ISAT University. The Western Institute of Technology (WIT), the top producer of Electrical Engineers in the Region has produced at least 155 passers out of around 362 takers.

The Chemical engineering profession focuses on the invention and development of materials and processes useful to society. It involves research, process operations, marketing, industrial and government liaison, and company management. In some cases, Chemical Engineers are involved in plant evaluation, commercial plant design, plant startup, and plant operations.

There are seven (7) Chemical Engineering schools operating in the Region in the last six (6) years. The high performing, based on their passing average of not lower than 75% in Chemical Engineer Licensure Examinations given by the PRC from 2017 to 2019 are Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod and UP Visayas. The Region has produced at least 392 passers out of 713 takers in the last five (5) years. The UP Visayas, the top producer of Chemical Engineers in the Region has produced at least 132 passers out of around 163 takers.

Civil engineering profession deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, houses, and railways.

There are at least seventeen (17) Civil Engineering schools operating in the Region in the last six (6) years. The high performing, based on their passing average of not lower than 75% in Civil Engineer Licensure examination given by the PRC from 2015 to 2019 is Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
