Iloilo City welcomed the holiday season with spectacular displays of lights at the City Hall and the Provincial Capitol officially switched on last December 13.
The events, which are much-anticipated yearly traditions, drew throngs of Ilonggos and tourists alike, eager to bask in the festive atmosphere.
The Iloilo Provincial Capitol Grounds sparkled with holiday cheer as the Christmas Village officially opened.
With the theme “Christmas Village sa Makabagong Pilipinas,” the event features upgraded decorations funded by a P4.8 million budget.
Thousands of visitors gathered to witness the grand lighting ceremony, led by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., who emphasized the event’s goal of bringing families together and boosting the local economy.
The evening included a lantern parade, fireworks, and a vibrant trade fair. Highlights of the village include a giant Christmas tree, dazzling light displays, and family-friendly attractions.
“We want Iloilo to shine as a premier holiday destination,” said Defensor.
The Christmas Village will remain open until January, offering visitors a festive experience filled with lights, music, and holiday joy.
The tradition of lighting up Iloilo City began years ago and has grown into a grander spectacle each season. Mayor Jerry Treñas highlighted the importance of these events in fostering community spirit and bringing joy to Ilonggos amid challenges.
“This is more than just lights and decorations. It’s about coming together as a community to celebrate hope, love, and resilience,” said Treñas during his speech at the lighting ceremony.
For visitors and residents, the festive glow of the City Hall and Capitol symbolizes the warmth and vibrancy of Iloilo City. The lights will remain on throughout the holiday season, serving as a backdrop for family outings, romantic strolls, and moments of reflection as the year comes to an end.
The lighting ceremony transformed the City Hall and Capitol grounds into glowing landmarks, adorned with thousands of multi-colored LED lights that formed intricate patterns and shapes. Trees surrounding the area sparkled with cascading lights, while the façades of the buildings were illuminated in vibrant hues, enhancing their architectural beauty.
Crowds started gathering hours before the official switch-on. Families with children, groups of friends, and couples on dates lined the streets, eagerly awaiting the spectacle. When the lights came to life, the crowd erupted in applause, with many capturing the moment on their phones.
Children were seen marveling at the giant Christmas tree, which stood at the heart of the City Hall grounds, shimmering with ornaments and a glowing star atop. Food vendors and local artisans also set up stalls nearby, adding to the festive spirit by offering local delicacies and handcrafted souvenirs.
The lighting display at the City Hall and Capitol is part of Iloilo City’s annual Christmas attractions, which have become a hallmark of the season. These attractions include nightly performances by local choirs and dance groups at the plaza, creating a lively and heartwarming atmosphere. The city government also organized a series of events such as the Parol of Hope lantern competition and the Paskwa sa Plaza food festival, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
