ISUFST Professor Completes Halal Training in Indonesia

Prof. Cjay Soliven of the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) successfully completed the Short Course on Halal Food Standard Compliance in Jakarta, Indonesia. The training, held from November 25 to December 4, 2024, was part of the Commission on Higher Education’s Higher Education Upskilling and Study for Advancement of Staff and Faculty (HUSAY) Program and conducted at Universitas Bakrie.

The 10-day course focused on essential Halal standards, processes, and production, equipping Prof. Soliven with specialized knowledge for integration into ISUFST’s Bachelor of Science in Fisheries program. Drawing from Indonesia’s well-established Halal ecosystem, he plans to adapt best practices to enhance the university’s curriculum and research.

Prof. Soliven, a top 5 Fisheries Technologist Board Exam topnotcher in October 2016, emphasized the importance of promoting inclusivity in the predominantly non-Christian communities of the region.

“The insights gained from this training will significantly enhance ISUFST’s Bachelor of Science in Fisheries program,” he said. “By understanding Halal compliance, we can integrate critical elements into our curriculum and benchmark Indonesia’s strong Halal ecosystem to apply successful practices.”

He also noted plans to develop courses and modules on Halal principles and market dynamics, aiming to increase students’ employability and raise awareness of Halal compliance.

Dr. Nordy D. Siason Jr., ISUFST president, voiced his support for the initiative. “This opportunity reflects ISUFST’s commitment to fostering excellence and integrity in education. By equipping our faculty with specialized training, we pave the way for sustainable practices and innovations in our community.”

Prof. Soliven’s participation aligns with ISUFST’s goal of becoming a leader in fisheries, agriculture, and technology research in Southeast Asia. His efforts support the university’s mission to equip graduates with specialized knowledge to meet industry demands and advance sustainable development. (Herman Lagon/PAMMCO)
