BACOLOD City – A child and a senior citizen were killed in two separate road accidents in Negros Occidental on Monday.

In Kabankalan City, a two-year-old boy was run over by a truck loaded with soft drinks after he suddenly crossed the road at Barangay Oringao.

Police withheld the name of the fatality.

Investigation showed that the child was reportedly hit by the rear part of a truck driven by Franklin Amorganda, 32, of Bais City, Negros Oriental.

The child died on the spot while Amorganda was placed under police custody.

In Bago City, Nimfa Fernandez, 89, of Barangay Taloc was also killed in a road crash after she was allegedly hit by a motorcycle driven by Mark Boncalon, 19, of the said village, who failed to notice her while she was crossing the street.

Police Major John Joel Batusbatusan, city police chief, said Boncalon lost control over his vehicle and fell on the ground.

Both sustained head injuries and were rushed to a hospital, where Fernandez died few hours later.

Batusbatusan said Boncalon was already discharged from the hospital and was placed under police custody but was released the following day after the lapse of the 18-hour reglementary detention period.

Both parties had agreed to settle the case.

Batusbatusan said Boncalon also committed traffic violations for not wearing a helmet, and driving without license and other pertinent documents.
