BACOLOD City – A police officer died and five others, including a toddler, were injured following a collision between a motorcycle and a tricycle at Hacienda Bernabe, Barangay Salvacion, Murcia, Negros Occidental, last Monday.

The deceased was identified as Police Corporal Edward Peña, 36, a resident of the aforementioned village.

The names of the injured parties, which include a three-year-old girl and the tricycle driver, have been withheld.

Police Captain Rodney Sarona, deputy chief of the Murcia Municipal Police Station, reported that the officer was likely speeding home from duty when he attempted to overtake a tricycle.

Peña may have miscalculated the distance to the tricycle, leading to a sideswipe.

The impact caused Peña to be thrown off his motorcycle, while the tricycle veered and struck a concrete post at the roadside.

Despite wearing a helmet, Peña succumbed to severe head injuries later that night, Sarona noted.

The injured individuals have since been released from the hospital.

The tricycle driver is currently in police custody, awaiting further investigation.
