Filipino basketball legend Jimmy Alapag’s sweet NBA Summer League championship journey paid off after he was tapped by G League team Stockton Kings to be a part of their coaching staff.
Stockton is the G League affiliate team of the Sacramento Kings where NBA-hopefuls first play before getting their final call-up from the mother team.
With that being said, the former PBA MVP and multi-champion Alapag will be the first Filipino to coach in the NBA summer league and G league.
“Words can’t express how thankful I am for this opportunity to join the Stockton Kings for the upcoming NBA G League season,” posted Alapag in his Instagram account.
Sacramento Kings’ front office decided to set a meeting with Alapag a few days after helping their summer league team capture the title.
Alapag later confirmed the news, stating that Sacramento will be meeting with him and will discuss some things that the Filipino legend has no idea about.
“Special thanks to Coach Bobby Jackson and Paul Johnson for believing in me and giving me this chance. Looking forward to connecting with the entire Stockton community,” added Alapag.
Before taking his expertise to the Stockton Kings, Alapag left a major imprint with future NBA two-way force Davion Mitchell whom he mentored during their championship campaign.
