Students and faculty at Buga National High School in Leon, Iloilo now enjoy an all-weather facility for their activities, thanks to the new covered gym provided by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office has completed the Php 4.94-million multi-purpose building, which will host sports, social, academic, and other school events, offering protection from both the sun and rain.
The facility, spanning 16.5 by 23 meters, features 12 reinforced concrete columns, a five-span roof, and includes electrical and painting work.
District Engineer Mario G. Soriano from the DPWH 6 Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel’s office noted that the gym, located within the school grounds, will also serve as a sports and event venue for nearby communities.
RD Oropel highlighted that the gym, equipped with sports utilities and training areas, is designed for use throughout the year, even during adverse weather, enhancing its community value.
“The construction of the multi-purpose covered gym is more than just a building project. It is a symbol of unity, progress, and community spirit,” Oropel said.
He added that the gym could also act as a temporary shelter during calamities for those living in high-risk areas.
DE Soriano emphasized the gym’s benefit for exercising during extreme weather, ensuring that activities can proceed comfortably and safely. Beyond convenience, the gym also provides a spacious and ventilated evacuation space during emergencies, a significant improvement over cramped classroom.
The DPWH continues to develop such infrastructures to bolster local communities with better and safer public amenities.
