P14-M WASTE?: Roxas City esplanade collapses

By Felipe V. Celino

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A portion of the P14 million esplanade on Washington Street here collapsed Friday evening.

Residents in the areas said they heard a loud cracking noise around 11 pm on Nov. 11, 2022.

Mayor Ronnie Dadivas immediately conducted an inspection and called for a press conference with the media.

He said that he will create an independent committee that will investigate what happened to the ongoing project undertaken by MBM Construction.

Dadivas said about 150 meters of the Roxas City Riverside Promenade was damaged.

Some P4 million or 30 percent of the project fund was released to the contractor that is now four months into the works.

Phase 3 of the project is scheduled to finish before Dec. 8, 2022, in time for Roxas City’s fiesta.

“Manami na kuntani ang esplanade apang narumpag pa ini (The esplanade was looking good until it collapsed),” some residents commented.

Dadivas assured that the appropriate persons will face the consequences if they found liabilities in the incident.

“But it’s too premature to blame somebody,” Dadivas said as he thanked that no one got hurt in the incident.

According to local resident Gil Albaladejo, he was dismayed with what happened to the esplanade project of the city government.

“Engkanto, murto, kapre ukon nano nga tamawo ang nagbaliskad sang foot walk,” Albaladejo said in a radio interview.

He believed that the construction will go back to zero because of the damages.

“Sigurado ko, balik ni sa uno, wash out mo, kanugon sang kuwarta sang gobyerno”, he added.
