PARTICIPATE launches Academy of Multiparty Democracy

Leaders and representatives of eight political parties gathered Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Richmonde Hotel Eastwood for the kick-off of the “Academy of Multiparty Democracy.”

The training program is designed by the PARTICIPATE consortium, the Ateneo School of Government, and the La Salle Institute of Governance.

It aims to equip officials and representatives of various political parties with a comprehensive understanding of party politics to promote effective governance and strengthen democratic processes.

It is composed of three modules and will span from November 2023 until February 2024.

“Strong and institutionalized political parties are the critical missing links in democratic consolidation. Building programmatic and people-based parties is the key to addressing clan and patronage politics in the Philippines,” Dr. Teehankee says.

Teehankee added that the Academy of Multiparty Democracy seeks to address this deficit with a comparative perspective.

The first module is a three-day event that features the theme “Political Party System and Parties in Government: Institutional Development.” Module 1 will be an exploration of essential aspects of party politics in successful democracies. The role of women and youth in political parties will also be discussed.

To encourage active learning and exchange of best practices among participants, the Academy will employ a multifaceted approach, led by experts in political science, governance, and party management.

Module 1 will take place from November 27-29, 2023, while Modules 2 and 3 will be held next year on January 15-17 and February 5-7, respectively.

All national and regional political parties and party list organizations are welcome to register for the succeeding modules, with the goal of training leaders who play vital roles within their parties and instill deep commitment to understand democratic processes.

PARTICIPATE is a non-partisan, pro-democracy coalition dedicated to engage and empower the political participation of the Filipino people. It aims to strengthen citizen oversight of electoral processes, increase the availability and accessibility of information to promote informed voting, and support constituency-building for electoral reforms.
