BACOLOD City – A policeman died in an alleged accidental firing incident inside their house in Barangay Mansilingan here Sunday, Oct. 30.
The victim was identified as Patrolman Val Liansing, 24, of the said village.
Liansing was temporarily assigned to E.B. Magalona Municipal Police Station in Negros Occidental before he was supposed to undergo training for Basic Internal Security Operations Course (BISOC).
Police Captain Elmer Bonilla, head of Police Station 7, said the victim was reportedly cleaning his .45-caliber firearm when gunfire was heard inside his bedroom around 11:40 a.m.
Bonilla said the victim was able to run to the bathroom beside his room, where he was found by his family.
Bonilla said the victim suffered a gunshot wound in the jaw. He was taken to a hospital, but he expired later that night.
Police recovered from the victim’s room his personal firearm, and some cleaning materials.
The victim was supposed to be part of the augmentation personnel for the observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days.
Bonilla said they will subject the victim to a paraffin test to determine if indeed his personal firearm hit him.
Liansing’s story, which focused on their family, won first place in the category “Sa Mata ng Batang Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, or 4Ps” in this year’s Salaysay ng Buhay ng Pamilyang Pantawid of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and became a policeman in August 2020.
He was raised by his visually impaired mother and grandmother along with his older sister with the same condition.
Liansing and his late father were the only ones in their family to have clear eyesight.
His three younger siblings are attending classes at the Special Education (SPED) Center here.
