Runaway tire kills senior citizen

BACOLOD City – An elderly man died after he was hit by a tire that got detached from a truck loaded with construction materials at Langka Stop Alegria, Barangay Cabahug, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental last Tuesday.

Killed was Bernardino Abad, 71, of the said village.

Police Corporal Peter John Dela Cruz, traffic investigator of Cadiz City Police Station, said the truck driven by 37-year-old Reynaldo Derder was on its way to Barangay Jerusalem after buying construction materials when the tire separated from the assembly hub and hit Abad who was walking on the roadside.

Dela Cruz said the victim was declared dead on arrival at a hospital due to injuries on his spine and body.

The truck driver was already released from police custody after the lapse of the 18-hour reglementary detention.

He added that the truck owner has also extended burial assistance to the victim’s family.
