BACOLOD City – A sea turtle was rescued by fishermen after it got trapped in a fish cage at Barangay Sara-et, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental Thursday.

Commander Ludovico Librilla Jr., head of Philippine Coast Guard-Negros Occidental, said 61-year-old Francisco Gayonga reported the trapped turtle to authorities.

Fishermen removed the turtle from the fish cage and brought it to the shoreline onboard a utility boat.

Librilla said the turtle is 20 years old and weighs more than 100 kilograms.

The PCG coordinated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its proper disposition.

Authorities checked the turtle’s condition before releasing it to the water.

No injuries were seen on the turtle, Librilla said.
