To protect against frequent flooding and sea overflow, especially during typhoons, storm surges, and high tides, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has erected a slope protection structure in the coastal barangay of Canhawan, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.
The initiative, orchestrated by the Guimaras District Engineering Office and funded through the 2023 General Appropriations Act with an investment of ₱57.6 million, features a 105-linear meter flood control system complete with a concrete barrier and stairs.
These additions will not only safeguard the community but also serve as a docking site to support local fishermen, streamlining their daily routines of transporting their catch.
DPWH 6 Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel, relaying information from District Engineer Randolfo A. Melosantos, emphasized the critical role of the structure in protecting lives, properties, and livelihoods from calamities and erosion.
“Thanks to this project, the residents living along the coast can rest easier, knowing they have a buffer against the destructive forces of nature,” said RD Oropel.
He also highlighted the enhancement of the local fishing port as a boon to the fisherfolk, providing an easier and more efficient means to offload their catch, which could potentially increase their earnings and support their families.
Furthermore, DE Melosantos pointed out the significant impact of the port’s improvements on transportation, economic growth, and tourism within Barangay Canhawan.
“By offering a gateway to island barangays and tourist destinations like Yato Island and Isla Bali, we’re not only improving safety and access to services but also enhancing the travel experience for visitors,” added DE Melosantos, envisioning a boost in tourism for the region. (DPWH-6)
