A truck crushed a 71-year-old man to death Monday evening in Ajuy, Iloilo.
Police identified the victim as Victor Catalan, a resident of Sitio Pinanobol, Brgy. Culasi, Ajuy, Iloilo.
According to police reports, Joel Cacnio, 33, a resident of Barangay Nueva, San Pedro City, Laguna, was driving a Hino 10-wheeler wing van (license plate CCO-7785) from Barotac Viejo when the incident happened.
The vehicle was carrying 25 tons of corn and was on its way to Roxas City, Capiz.
While Cacnio was navigating an elevated portion of the road at Sitio Punta Eki, Culasi village, the vehicle’s engine overheated.
He tried to maneuver the vehicle to tackle the uphill trek, but it slowly reversed.
Cacnio swore that he did not see Catalan walking by the side of the road.
The truck hit the victim who fell to the ground and was later ran over by the wheels.
Cacnio later saw the victim’s body. He immediately alighted from the vehicle and asked for help.
The driver is now in the custody of Ajuy Police Station for proper disposition of his case.
