An Ilonggo netizen transformed the grave of his departed relative into a colorful and unique tomb as a way of honoring them on Pyesta Minatay or All Souls’ Day on Nov 2, 2021.

The netizen was 27-year-old Alfonso Louise Alejandro II from Brgy. Sinikway, Lapuz.

Instead of the usual flat white paint that dominates the cemeteries, Alejandro decided to paint the tomb of his grandfather with a shade of green. He also incorporated “abstract designs” in his paintjob.

According to Alejandro, cleaning and painting the tomb of his grandfather has been his yearly tradition every All Souls’ Day.

“Every year amo gid na ang panata ko na biskan ano matabo, tunlan ko kag panamion ang pantyo niya,” he said.

Alejandro lost his grandfather when he was just six years old.

Aside from his name, which was his keepsake from his grandfather who was also named “Alfonso,” the colorful tomb at Tanza Cemetery will serve as a symbol of their endearment and bond.

Authorities advised Ilonggo families to visit their departed loved ones in cemeteries, private parks, and columbaries before the scheduled closure on October 29 to November 2, 2021.

In Iloilo City, Mayor Jerry Treñas has issued Executive Order (EO) 129-A amending EO 129 mandating the guidelines on the observance of the Undas or Piyesta Minatay following the resolution of the national Inter-Agency Task Force (NIATF).

Under the EO, families will be allowed to visit the cemeteries before Oct. 29 and after Nov. 2 subject to the practice of minimum public health standards.

During the said period, bringing of alcoholic drinks and foods will be prohibited.
