The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) Food Safety Manual Project team has launched a Participatory Food Safety Manual titled “Food Safety and Community: A Practical Guide to Food Safety for Food Service MSMEs in Urbanized Areas of Iloilo.”
The launch took place on June 7, 2024, at the Performing Arts Hall, UP Visayas, coinciding with World Safety Day celebrations.
Led by Dr. Johannes M. Magpusao, the project team comprises experts from UPV’s School of Technology, with contributions from the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, and the Regional Research Center.
The manual aims to address the food safety needs of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Iloilo City and the surrounding province, supporting the region’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
Chancellor Clement Camposano welcomed guests and UPV officials, emphasizing the critical role of food safety in sustaining Iloilo’s vibrant gastronomic culture. The initiative highlights UPV’s commitment to public service and community welfare.
“We are proud to contribute to the food safety education of our local food handlers. This manual is a testament to our dedication to ensuring safe and healthy food for everyone,” said Dr. Johannes Magpusao.
The project has collaborated with local government units (LGUs) of Iloilo City, Dumangas, and Oton, reflecting a strong partnership between the university and the community.
The manual’s development involved a multidisciplinary team, including Mr. Kristoffer Panes (illustrator), Dr. Alicia Gonzales (language editor), Ms. Emiliza Lozada, Dr. Jade Pahila, Mr. Janreich Miramon, Mr. John Ray Molavin, Mr. Jose Marie Eslopor, Asst.
