BACOLOD City – The Bago City Police Station in Negros Occidental is investigating the death of a non-uniformed personnel (NUP) assigned to the station who reportedly died of accidental gun discharge inside their house in Barangay Calumangan Friday morning.

Police Major John Joel Batusbatusan, city police chief, identified the fatality as TJ Palpara, 35.

Batusbatusan said Palpara’s mother heard a gunshot inside her son’s bedroom around 9:45 a.m., and when she checked, she saw her son with a lone gunshot wound in the head.

Batusbatusan said the victim was alone in his room and probably cleaning his .9mm-caliber (Glock 17) pistol when the incident happened. It is possible that he forgot to check that the gun was loaded with ammunition.

He added that the victim possessed a brand new licensed firearm which he purchased two weeks ago.

Batusbatusan said the victim was probably unfamiliar with the firearm and was not careful in handling the weapon.

Although they are initially looking into the angle of accidental gun firing, Batusbatusan said they will continue their investigation to determine the real reason.
