Globe reduces power usage, CO2 emissions with new tech

Globe Telecom is taking significant strides towards sustainability by adopting energy-efficient technologies and phasing out outdated equipment, resulting in substantial reductions in power consumption and carbon emissions.

In its latest environmental initiative, Globe has cut its power consumption by approximately 3,808 megawatt-hours (MWh) and reduced its carbon emissions by 2,811 metric tons.

This reduction is equivalent to the emissions from 669 gasoline-powered vehicles for a year, signaling a major leap in the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.

A key innovation in Globe’s sustainability strategy is the introduction of system-on-chip-based plug-in cards.

These cards have allowed the telecom giant to double the number of supported cell sites while halving energy consumption, which significantly decreases the environmental impact of its operations, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

As of December 31, 2023, this technology alone has led to a reduction of 231 MWh in power consumption and 173 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

Furthering its environmental goals, Globe has also been actively retiring obsolete equipment and embracing more modern, efficient technologies. This shift not only addresses the issue of electronic waste but also enhances operational efficiency across its network.

Additionally, Globe has implemented various measures such as frequency refarming and equipment repurposing, which collectively have reduced energy consumption by another 3,577 MWh and cut CO2 emissions by an additional 2,638 metric tons—equivalent to the emissions from 628 gasoline-powered vehicles.

Joel Agustin, Globe’s Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering, emphasized the dual benefit of these initiatives.

“Our commitment is to deliver exceptional service while ensuring that we contribute positively to environmental sustainability,” Agustin said.

He highlighted that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate action goals.

These technological upgrades and operational improvements reflect Globe’s proactive approach to integrating sustainability into its core business practices.

The company continues to explore and invest in energy-efficient solutions to further reduce its environmental footprint, ensuring that its push for connectivity does not come at the cost of the planet.
