COVID-19 positive nun passes away

One of the nuns of the Carmelite Monastery and Convent in Barangay Lopez Jaena Norte, La Paz district who was infected with COVID-19 died last Saturday, according to Mayor Jerry Treñas.

The nun was among the 24 nuns and nine staff members of the monastery who contracted COVID-19 last week.

“I am offering my condolences to the Carmelite sisters of Lapaz. One of them who was previously infected by COVID passed away last night,” Treñas said in a statement on Sunday.

The Carmelite Monastery and Convent was placed on lockdown last July 25, 2021 after 33 nuns and staff were infected with COVID-19.

Based on the data from the Iloilo City government, the index case was traced to a nun who was also inside the monastery. The nuns had no recent exposure outside the monastery and were not vaccinated.

Meanwhile, Treñas appealed to the public to get vaccinated as he offered the prayers for the Carmelite sisters of Lapaz.

“Let us continue to pray for the sisters who are affected as we should continue to understand that we need to be vaccinated. Millions all over the world have already been vaccinated and protected from the virus. Let us protect ourselves,” he added. (ERS)
