DOLE pushes for modernization of marginalized fishermen

DOLE-6 Regional Director Ticao (middle) and the municipal officials of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras observe a beneficiary checking the engine provided by DOLE.

The local municipal officials call it a Christmas gift, but for DOLE, it is more than a gift. It is a step to modernization and a long term solution to the livelihood problem of the marginalized fishermen.

With the purpose to help uplift the living conditions of the local fishermen, DOLE-RO VI Regional Director Cyril L. Ticao led the distribution of the engines to one hundred fifty (150) beneficiaries from sixteen (16) barangays in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.

The three (3) million pesos worth of engines from DOLE, generated smiles from the faces of the fisherfolks. It gave them hope, confidence and strength to go out farther at sea for their livelihood.

Celestiano Ganza, Jr. shared his emotions after receiving an engine. “Sa bulig sang DOLE indi na kami mag-agwanta sa daan nga motor, pwede na kami makapalayo sa pagpangisda kag syempre mas madamu ang kuha, May confidence na kami kay bag-o ang unit.’’  (With the new engine from DOLE we will not have to endure anymore the unreliable and old ones. Now, we have the confidence to venture farther and catch more fish for our families.)

Mr. Ganza is one of the 8,000 registered fishermen of the municipality, which according to the municipal officials has the longest coastal line (coastal length of 102 kilometers) among the five municipalities in the Province of Guimaras.  For years they have been using wooden paddles or persevere with the malfunctioning engines.

During the turn-over, RD Ticao reminded and challenged the beneficiaries. “Take care of the opportunity given to you. DOLE is willing to help and if you value the project, we can facilitate for more assistance in the future.”

Guimaras Field Office OIC-Head Richie Buyco disclosed that the project was the brainchild of the Regional Director. “RD Ticao understands your struggles so you are provided with this facility. You must use it responsibly.”

Mr Ganza urged his fellow beneficiaries to value the assistance they received. “Halungan lang naton ang gamit nga ginhatag sang DOLE.  Daku nga oportunidad kag daku ang mabulig para sa aton.  Halungan ta ina kay indi kita makasarang magbakal sang bag-o.” (Let us take care of the assistance provided by DOLE. It is a great opportunity and a big help as our own, we cannot afford to buy a new one.)

With the idea of a sustainable livelihood, RD Ticao, expressed his intentions of giving more support such as fishing gears, fishing equipment and trainings.

“That is enhancement,” said Guimaras Field Office DILEEP Focal Anthony Silveo, “We plan to coordinate with TESDA to train the beneficiaries in engine maintenance and repair. With the skills, they can even earn extra income by servicing others.”
