Globe has begun constructing the first solar-powered off-grid cell site in Taganak Island, Turtle Islands, a remote heritage-protected area and wildlife sanctuary in Tawi-Tawi.
The groundbreaking project aims to provide mobile and data connectivity to over 10,000 residents, empowering them with essential services, economic opportunities, and environmental protection capabilities.
The cell site is set to be completed by mid-2025 and is expected to benefit not only residents but also visitors to the sanctuary, enabling them to stay connected during their travels.
“As a critical nesting ground for green sea turtles, the Turtle Islands will benefit from enhanced monitoring and protection of its ecosystem,” said Globe Senior Director Gerhard Tan at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Powered entirely by solar energy, the site will feature an advanced antenna system and AI-driven energy management with remote monitoring.
This eliminates the need for diesel generators, a significant advantage in an area where transportation and fuel deliveries are unpredictable, while reducing carbon emissions by 40 metric tons annually.
“This project is a solid testament to Globe’s commitment to sustainable connectivity, made possible by a strong partnership with the government and local leaders to empower even our most remote communities,” Tan added.
The local government of Turtle Islands, the 2nd Marine Brigade of the Western Mindanao Command, and the Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy are collaborating with Globe on the project.
Municipal Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul emphasized the initiative’s transformative impact on the community, stating, “Connecting Turtle Islands to the digital world marks a new chapter for our community, bringing opportunities for growth, eco-tourism, and security.”
The municipal government also allocated land for the site, signaling their commitment to progress and digital inclusion.
Tourism Officer Abrille Yusop Oraiz shared her excitement about the project, saying, “Turtle Islands is thrilled to partner with Globe to connect our breathtaking paradise with the world. Let’s share the beauty of our islands and empower local communities through reliable connectivity.”
Brigadier General Nestor Narag Jr. of the 2nd Marine Brigade highlighted the dual impact of the project, saying, “This collaboration not only strengthens our capability to safeguard the Turtle Islands and Sulu Sea but also brings crucial connectivity to the community, aligning security with progress.”
As part of its broader commitment to sustainability, Globe also donated trash bins to support waste management on the islands, further contributing to environmental stewardship.
This initiative underscores the potential of public-private partnerships to boost digital inclusion, eco-tourism, environmental conservation, and security in the Philippines’ most remote areas.
