Guimaras’ 2022 annual food inflation hits 8.8%, highest in four years

The annual average food inflation in Guimaras for 2022 soared to 8.8, the highest food inflation level in four years.

The figure is 9.1 percentage points higher than the -0.3 percent inflation in 2021 and 7.3 percentage points faster than the 1.5 percent average food inflation in 2020, based on the Retail Price Survey of Commodities for the Generation of Consumer Price Index of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The top three food commodity groups/items with the largest share in the inflation trend, which pushed food inflation to the 8.8% highest level in four comparative years:

  • Rice with 0.2% inflation and 45.5 percent share to the annual food inflation from –12.3% in 2021;
  • Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses with 28.5 percent inflation and 28.6 percent share from –5.2% a year ago; and
  • Sugar, confectionery and desserts at 25.3 percent with a 6.3 percent share to inflation trend from the 2.4% in 2021.

Other food items which contributed to the uptrend of the 2022 annual average food inflation in Guimaras were Fruits and nuts (11.9%) from 3.0% Fish and other seafood (9.7%); Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals (12.5%); and Milk, other dairy products and eggs (5.1%).

The data also showed that all food commodity items in 2022 posted higher price changes when compared to their 2021 rates.
