Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas will return to his roots as a law instructor after he confirmed on Thursday that he will be teaching at the new College of Law of West Visayas State University (WVSU) in La Paz district.

Treñas, a lawyer by profession, first confirmed his return to legal education through a post in his official Facebook page.

The mayor, who graduated from the Ateneo Law School, taught law subjects at the University of Iloilo before he ran for city councilor.

“I attended the first meeting of the faculty of the College of Law at West Visayas State University. It takes more than two years of hard work and determination to build the college in the university. Since then, the goal of the university is to produce globally competent life-long learners, and excellence has always been a tradition,” the mayor said in his Facebook post.

Treñas told Daily Guardian in a phone interview that he will be teaching the basic Introduction to Law subject in WVSU’s inaugural law batch.

He added that he will be “more mellow” unlike when he last taught law, and that he won’t be a “terror” teacher.

“I will be teaching just the basic, Intro to Law. That will be very easy. This time, I’ll be more mellow and since this is a basic subject. I won’t be what they would call a ‘terror’ professor. I’m only going to be Atty. Jerry Treñas in the College of Law. It’s going to be separate from my duties as the mayor of the city of Iloilo,” he said.

Classes at the newly minted WVSU College of Law are expected to start on September 7, 2020, with 30 students accepted into its pioneer batch.
