Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas recognized on Saturday, April 20, the necessity for the city government to look into possible food-related health concerns as it moves forward with its activities as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative City of Gastronomy.

Despite promoting the city’s culinary attractions, Treñas noted the health implications of popular local dishes like La Paz batchoy, kansi, and siopao, which are known for their rich, fatty ingredients.

“The factor of healthy food [awareness] is gradually coming in. Anyway, we will also slowly [study] upon [health concerns]. La Paz batchoy is very, you know, our [kansi] has [cow] brains, and our siopao is full of delicious [ingredients]. We will definitely look into that,” the mayor said.

In 2023, Treñas backed a healthy public food procurement policy initiative led by Pasig-based ImagineLaw, aiming to make nutritious food more accessible citywide.

“We are committed to creating a healthier food environment in our city. With this collaboration, we hope to make nutritious food more easily accessible to all members of our community,” the mayor said then.

WORLD TOUR

As the city’s gastronomic reputation grows internationally, officials and local chefs are preparing to participate in global events.

First is a CityNet meeting in Seoul from May 8 to 12, featuring a Gastronomy Expo, followed by a Creative City of Gastronomy cluster meeting in Phuket on the same dates.

Iloilo City, the only UNESCO-designated City of Gastronomy in the Philippines among 56 globally, will also present at a Gastronomy Showcase in Macau on June 20 and 22 during the 25th anniversary of the region’s administrative status.

Chef Ariel Castañeda Jr. from Richmonde Hotel Iloilo, along with other Ilonggo brands, will be attending.

The city will also make its debut at the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Braga, Portugal, from July 1 to 5, joining other cities celebrated for their contributions across various creative domains.

The Philippines boasts three Creative Cities, with Baguio City recognized for Crafts and Folk Art, and Cebu City for Design.
