Two abattoirs in Guimaras slaughter more hog than cattle

Two operational abattoirs in Buenavista and Jordan in Guimaras slaughtered 3,258 heads of cattle and hog during the first quarter of 2020.

Hogs accounted for 77.72 percent of the total heads slaughtered while cattle shared 22.28 percent.

“The gathered data on slaughterhouses or abattoirs revealed that in the first 3 months of the current year, slaughtered hog reached at 2,532 translated to 153,495 kg carcass weight which is nearly three times more than the cattle carcass production recorded at 56,389 kg with 726 heads only,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare explained.

Based on the month-on-month slaughtered hog production, March top with 946 heads, contributing 37.36 percent to the total production for the first quarter of 2020, while the lowest was recorded in January with 662 heads.

The number of cattle slaughtered got the highest point also in March with 276 heads while the least number was observed in January with 183 heads, contributing 25.21 percent to the total slaughtered cattle in the first quarter of the current year.

In terms of volume, 56,389 cattle carcass weight were produced from the 726 slaughtered cattle heads during the first quarter of 2020 in Guimaras province. Some 16,747 kgs (29.7 percent) came from Buenavista and 39,642 kgs (70.3 percent) of the total cattle carcass weight were from Jordan.

As for the supply of hog carcass for the province, out of the 2,532 slaughtered hog heads, 1,182 heads (46.7 percent) of the provincial total were from Buenavista and the 1,350 heads (53.3 percent) were from Jordan.
