Upsilon Sigma Phi to Converge in Iloilo for Layas Pakadto Visayas Event

The Upsilon Sigma Phi, the oldest Greek-letter organization in Asia, is set to hold a grand fellowship called Layas Pakadto Visayas in Iloilo City this coming March 30 to April 2, 2023.

The event, spearheaded by USP Alumni Association Chairman Roel Z. Castro, will gather more than 200 members and relatives from different parts of the country.

The four-day event will be packed with exciting activities that the participants are eagerly looking forward to.

These activities include a tour of Western Visayas’ tourist spots such as Boracay Island and Guimaras Island, heritage sites of Iloilo Province and City, golf tournament at the oldest golf course in Sta. Barbara, target shooting at the firing range, and basketball.

Aside from these, the participants will also get a chance to taste the local delicacies of Iloilo, including Lapaz Batchoy, Pancit Molo, Roberto’s Siopao, Native Chicken Inasal, Talaba, and seafoods. Pasalubongs will also be available for the participants to bring back home.

Together with the UP Alumni Association, one of the highlight activities is a turn over of 10 computer sets to UP Visayas for their e-learning hub in UPV’s Miag-ao Campus. UPV Chancellor Clement Camposano will receive the donation.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas welcomed the participants of the Layas Pakadto Visayas event, expressing his delight that the fraternity has chosen Iloilo City as their venue for their gathering of brotherhood and good cause.

He hopes that the participants will have an enriching gathering and visit the beautiful places around the city.

“I am elated that you have chosen Iloilo City as your venue for the gathering of brotherhood and good cause. I hope that you could be able to visit the beautiful places around as well as have an enriching gathering”, Treñas said.

The Upsilon Sigma Phi, founded in 1918, is also the oldest student organization in continuous existence in the University of the Philippines. Membership remains exclusive to UP students of Manila, Diliman and Los Baños.

This year’s Layas Pakadto Visayas event is expected to strengthen the bond of brotherhood among Upsilon Sigma Phi members while exploring the beauty of Western Visayas.

It is a testament to the organization’s commitment to excellence and camaraderie that has lasted for over a century.
