UPV prof marks retirement with online lecture

Professor Jose P. Peralta of the Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT), College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas, celebrated his retirement with a lecture via live streaming on January 8, 2021.

A full professor of fisheries science, Peralta embarks on his retirement after 42 years at UP.  He joined the University in 1978.

Entitled “A Walk through an Institutional Development,” the presentation highlighted Peralta’s administrative, academic, and research journey in the University.

Peralta encouraged his colleagues in the profession to publish and reminded them of their role in the University.

“I advocate to the constituency, especially the faculty members, their role in institution building. You should not be contented with being employed and earning a decent living,” Peralta stated. “There is a better description of who we are. We are all-natural. We have the ability to become our full potential.”

A licensed chemical engineer and fisheries technologist, Peralta has vast experience in post-harvest fisheries. He specializes in marine natural products, fish processing and handling, food engineering, operation research, applications, computational mathematics, and process simulation. He has also created and invented several processes, prototypes, and utility designs for post-harvest fisheries. Furthermore, Peralta has published and presented papers in post-harvest fisheries, plant management, food issues, and policy advocacies.

Peralta’s more than four decades in UP earned him several honors and awards. He was a recipient of an International Publication Award in 2006 and 2007, United Coconut Planters Bank Professorial Chair in Fisheries in 2004 and 2007, Roberto S. Benedicto Professorial Chair in Fish Processing Technology in 1997 and 2005, Diamond Jubilee Professorial Chair in Fish Processing Technology in 2003, and Young Achievers Award for Education, Parangal Ng Bayan Awards in 1996, among others.

Peralta was the former Director of the IFPT, the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS), and the College Secretary of CFOS.

He also shared his knowledge and expertise as a consultant to various government and non-government agencies’ development projects. (Lenilyn B. Gallos/CFOS)
