5 escapees in NegOr jail recaptured

BACOLOD City – Authorities in Negros Oriental recaptured five escapees of Manjuyod District Jail over the weekend, said in a press release from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)- Region 7.

After five days of hiding, Janly Callao, 29, of Tayasan town, who was charged for rape; and Ronnie Flores, 25, of Sta. Catalina town, who was charged for illegal possession of firearms, surrendered to the authorities in Tayasan town last Saturday, following a negotiation through the help of Callao’s aunt.

On that same day, three other escapees – Julan Paculanang, 30, and Lito Pedro, 49, both residents of Jimalalud town, and both charged for rape; and Joseph Casido, 24, of Manjuyod town, who was charged for murder, were arrested in a follow-up operation after being sighted in the said town.

On February 3, the five prisoners escaped from jail by destroying the wall of detention cell no. 2, where they were detained.

Callao, Flores, and Paculanang are now in the custody of Bais City Jail while the two others are in Dumaguete City District Jail.

Following the incident, the national bureau urged all the local bureaus to intensify their security measures by conducting frequent jail inspections.
