COVID-19 surge in mega-dam project forces border restriction

The local government unit (LGU) of Lambunao in Iloilo will impose border restrictions starting today, April 19, 2021, following the surge in COVID-19 cases traced to the neighboring town of Calinog.

Lambunao Mayor Reynor Gonzales issued executive order (EO) No. 23 on Friday, April 16 ordering the enforcement of border restrictions and checkpoints in the boundaries of Lambunao and Calinog from April 19-29, 2021.

According to Gonzales, there is a need for a strict enforcement of border restrictions and checkpoints between the two towns to manage the spread of COVID-19.

New COVID-19 cases were traced to Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., the construction firm of the P11.2-billion Jalaur River Multipurpose Project – Stage II (JRMP II) in Calinog.

As of Thursday last week, 42 were detected in the construction firm. The firm was also placed on a lockdown starting on April 15 until further notice to curb the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, checkpoints will be established in the entry points of Lambunao, particularly in barangays Maribong, Buwang, Malag-it, Alugmawa and Cabunlawan based on the EO.

Residents of Lambunao may cross the border to go to work or run personal errands in Calinog but will not be able to return until the border restriction is lifted.

The EO also prohibits public utility vehicles of Calinog from loading and unloading their passengers at any point of Lambunao, including the public transport terminal.

Private vehicles are allowed to pass through but they could not stop at any point of Lambunao.

Meanwhile, residents of the town who are working at the Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. are advised to contact the municipal health office for proper guidance. (ERS)
