GCash innovates with Green Transaction Alerts

GCash, the Philippines’ premier finance application and largest cashless ecosystem, has launched a novel feature, Green Transaction Alerts, to advance its commitment to sustainability.

The feature allows users to view the grams of carbon they save when making digital transactions instead of traditional ones, thus promoting environmentally friendly practices.

In an innovative step to blend technology with environmental consciousness, GCash partnered with the China Beijing Environmental Exchange in 2019 to calculate the carbon emissions saved by switching from manual to digital transactions. The newly introduced Green Transaction Alerts utilize these metrics, giving users a tangible sense of their personal contribution to reducing carbon footprints through digital banking.

“Sustainability is embedded in the way GCash conducts its business, and we’ve provided ways for our users to see how their actions on the app also contribute to environment-friendly actions that ultimately protect our planet and contribute to a greener future,” said GCash Sustainability Head CJ Alegre in a statement.

The Green Transaction Alerts augment GCash’s existing sustainability-driven features like GForest, an award-winning gamified reforestation effort. Thanks to user engagement, GForest has successfully planted a remarkable total of 2.7 million trees as of 2024.

“We continue to look for ways to become an even more sustainable company, and more importantly, to provide avenues for Filipinos to take action for the planet – and this is only the beginning as we will gradually make these alerts available for other transactions in the coming months. Combining the power of tech with innovation and creativity, we hope this will form a habit for Filipinos to consciously act towards creating a positive impact with every simple digital transaction they make,” Alegre said.
