The Guimaras’ Players’ Center Sports Academy, headed by founder West Visayas State University’s (WVSU) Sports Director Dr. Richard Gabayoyo, successfully conducted their first-ever online chess tournament.

New to the online format due to the conflicts imposed by the nationwide pandemic, Dr. Gabayoyo and his team fortunately did not need time to adjust and kept things smooth sailing in holding their first e-chess competition.

The tournament was divided into two main categories: players 13-18 years old and another from 3 years old to 12 years old, players must be a resident of Guimaras in order to join.

It was an action-packed board thriller in both categories as the Guimarasnons showed their chess mastery even at such a young age.

For the 18 and under category, John Nava from Nueva Valencia, Guimaras was hailed as the champion while Kimberly Colaste ranked second and Rio Galfo third.

Meanwhile, in the 12 and under category, Jenre Angelo Fabay, a 12-year-old resident of Tagoon Salvacion, Buenavista Guimaras, was declared as the champion while Edian Martires and Arean Rose Seravanes ranked second and third respectively.

Dr. Gabayoyo and the rest of the Players’ Center Sports Academy would like to thank Mr. Justino Maglipong and Sheila Sinoy-Ferrer for helping make the tournament a success.
