Mentally challenged man hacks laborer to death

An alleged mentally challenged man killed a farm worker late evening of May 30, 2020 in Batad, Iloilo.

Ricanor Valdevieno, a widower, and resident of Barangay Bulak Sur, Batad, Iloilo, surrendered after the incident.

The victim, 23-year-old Dione Dellomes of Barangay Canas, San Dionisio town, was sleeping in a nipa hut when the suspect arrived.

Police Lieutenant Edgar Labiscase, Batad police chief, said Dellomes worked as a driver of a farm tractor.

His employer is the barangay chairman of Bulak Sur, Labiscase said.

The victim had been spending the night at the farmhouse rather than go home.

“There was no apparent reason or cause for the suspect to attack the victim,” Labiscase said.

Village officials claimed that Valdevieno could be suffering from nervous breakdown.

“When we asked him at the police station, we could not get a clear answer why he killed Dellomes,” Labiscase said.

Valdevieno is now detained at the lock-up cell of Batad Police Station but Labiscase said he would be made to undergo psychiatric examination.
